Sumatra is Indonesia’s wildest large island — a vast expanse of rainforest, active volcanoes and one of the world’s greatest freshwater lakes. Its northern reaches shelter critically endangered Sumatran orangutans, tigers and elephants, best encountered around Gunung Leuser National Park. Further south, Lake Toba — a colossal volcanic caldera — is home to the Batak people and their distinctive architecture, music and cuisine. Sumatra’s coffee, tea plantations and remote surf coasts add further texture to a destination that rewards travellers willing to move slowly and go deep.
