But beyond the waves, the archipelago holds one of Indonesia’s most fascinating indigenous cultures: the Mentawai people, whose shamans (sikerei) still practise ancestral rituals, traditional tattooing and hunting deep in the rainforest interior. With no roads across the islands, travel is by boat and dugout canoe, and stays range from surf camps on the coast to jungle immersions with local clans.
