Java private tour — 7 days by private car with a driver and by train, from Yogyakarta to Surabaya. Java is a huge island, and many of its most spectacular places lie hundreds of kilometers apart. Linking them into a single trip on your own is a real challenge — which is exactly what makes this route special. Over seven days, you’ll travel from Central to East Java, trading ancient temples for volcanoes, highland plateaus for underground caves, and small Javanese towns for landscapes that look like the set of an adventure film.
Watch the sunrise among the volcanoes of the Dieng Plateau, see its colorful lakes and the steaming Sikidang crater, and explore Prambanan and Borobudur. Descend into the vast Jomblang Cave to stand in its famous beam of light, and float along the underground river of Pindul Cave. Then the route heads east: the lava fields of Merapi, a panoramic train ride across Java, sunrise over the Bromo caldera, and the mighty Tumpak Sewu, where dozens of streams cascade into a lush green gorge.
This is Java in all its diversity — and a world away from Bali. Ancient civilizations, active volcanoes, caves, lakes, and waterfalls: almost every new day brings a completely different view outside your window.
For shorter trips, see the East Java tour and the Borobudur Prambanan tour.
By train: on day 5 you ride the Argo Wilis Panoramic train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya, and the ticket is included. The train arrives in Surabaya at approximately 17:25, then the private car takes you to the Bromo area (about 3 hours).
On days 2, 3 and 6 you leave at around 03:00 to catch the sunrise at Sikunir Hill, Borobudur and Bromo; on day 7 you head to Tumpak Sewu early in the morning. After the sunrise trips there is time to rest at the hotel.
Good physical fitness is needed. The descent to the base of Tumpak Sewu takes about 30 minutes over steep, wet and challenging terrain. In Jomblang Cave you are lowered on special equipment with a support team and then walk about 300 m; at Sikunir Hill it is a walk of about 1.5 km up to the viewpoint.
Flights to Yogyakarta and back from Surabaya, visa fees, meals other than breakfast (lunches and dinners), insurance, personal expenses and tips. Hotels with breakfast, the private car with an English-speaking driver, the train ticket, entrance fees and the Bromo jeep tour are included.
Your Java journey begins in Yogyakarta with a visit to the Sultan’s Palace (Kraton), the historical and cultural heart of the city and still the official residence of the ruling dynasty. Stroll through the palace complex, see classic Javanese architecture, and learn about the history of the sultanate and the culture of Central Java.

After lunch, head to Prambanan, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. Its soaring stone towers are dedicated to the main gods of the Hindu pantheon, and the walls are covered with reliefs depicting scenes from ancient epics. You’ll have time to explore the grounds and the main temples.

In the afternoon, drive to Wonosobo (about 3 hours). Check in at your hotel and enjoy free time.
An early start: at around 03:00, depart for the Dieng Plateau and Sikunir Hill. From the parking area, it’s a walk of about 1.5 km up to the viewpoint, reaching it before sunrise. As the first light appears, panoramic views of the mountains and volcanic landscapes of Central Java slowly emerge.
After sunrise, continue to Sikidang Crater, an active geothermal area with clouds of sulfur steam, hot ground, and bubbling mud pools, where you can see the island’s volcanic activity right at the surface.

Next, visit the Arjuna Temple Complex, a group of small ancient Hindu shrines set among Dieng’s highland scenery, then stop at the viewpoint over the Colorful Lake (Telaga Warna), known for water that shifts in color with the light and natural conditions.

Around 09:30, return to the hotel to rest after the early start. At about 13:00, transfer to the Borobudur area, check in, and enjoy free time.
At around 03:00, set off for Borobudur to greet the day at one of Indonesia’s most famous temples. In the early morning, the surrounding hills and volcanoes gradually appear in the first rays of the sun. After sunrise, explore the temple complex itself.

Following a short coffee break, return to the hotel to rest.
Around midday, travel to Kaliurang village at the foot of Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. A lava tour takes you through areas shaped by past eruptions, revealing the volcanic landscape and the traces of Merapi’s destructive power.

After lunch, continue to the Ratu Boko archaeological site. Its ruins stand on a hilltop with wide views over the surrounding area and Prambanan. Wander among the ancient stone structures and watch the sunset.
After 17:30, return to the hotel for a free evening.
In the morning, head to the Gunung Kidul area, home to Jomblang Cave. On arrival, the team will provide the equipment and help you gear up for the descent.

Jomblang is a vertical cave, so you’ll be lowered inside with special equipment and an experienced support team. At the bottom, a walk of about 300 m through rock formations leads to the cave’s most famous spot, where sunlight pours through an opening high above and forms a striking column of light.

After returning to the surface, changing, and a lunch break, continue to Pindul Cave for a completely different underground experience: tubing. Float on inflatable rings along an underground river, taking in the stone vaults and natural formations.

Return to the hotel for a free evening.
The morning is free. Rest after the busy previous days, take a walk, or spend the time as you like.
Around 12:00, transfer to Yogyakarta railway station and board the Argo Wilis Panoramic train to Surabaya. Its large panoramic windows frame the passing views of Java: towns, villages, rice fields, and mountains.

The train arrives in Surabaya at approximately 17:25. From there, drive to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area (about 3 hours). Check in and rest before the early start.
At around 03:00, set off by 4×4 jeep to a viewpoint to watch the sunrise over Bromo. Volcanic peaks and the vast caldera slowly emerge from the darkness, creating one of the most iconic panoramas in East Java.

After sunrise, the jeep tour continues across the park to the savanna, a green valley among volcanic mountains that contrasts sharply with the harsh landscape of the caldera. There’s time for a walk and photos.
Around 08:00, return to the hotel for breakfast and rest. At about 10:30, depart for the Tumpak Sewu Waterfall area (a drive of several hours). Check in and enjoy free time.

Early in the morning, head to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. First, take in the view from the top: a vast semicircular wall where dozens of streams plunge together into a gorge covered in dense greenery.

Then descend to the base of the waterfall. The path takes about 30 minutes over challenging terrain and requires good physical fitness and care. From below, you’ll see Tumpak Sewu from a completely different angle and appreciate the full scale of one of East Java’s most impressive waterfalls.
After climbing back up, return to the hotel to rest and pack.
