Overview

Agung is one of Indonesia’s active volcanoes and the highest point on Bali, rising 3,142 meters above sea level. Locals believe that the gods reside at its summit and call it the “Great Mountain.” There are many legends about Agung — all of them say that the volcano protects Bali from evil forces and serves as the spiritual center of the island.

Pilgrims and travelers have always sought to conquer it. Climbing Mount Agung is a serious challenge, even for those in excellent physical condition. The ascent follows a steep, rocky slope with an incline of about 45 degrees. The climb takes 4–6 hours, and the descent requires roughly the same amount of time. Throughout the journey, your knees will endure significant strain.

But the sunrise at the top of the “Great Mountain” is worth every step. Above the clouds — where the gods dwell — you’ll witness the sun awakening and touching the earth with its first rays. These are truly magical moments!

23:00 Climbing the volcano

The ascent begins at 11:00 p.m. from Pura Pengubengan Besakih. The route will take you to an altitude of 3,142 meters above sea level. The climb to the summit takes approximately 6.5 to 7.5 hours. The first rest stop will be after about 45 minutes of hiking. The number of subsequent stops depends on the physical condition of the participants. During the first two hours, you will cover two-thirds of the route. The remaining third is the most challenging part: you will ascend a steep, slippery rocky slope at an angle of about 60 degrees, with an elevation gain of 1,900 meters.

At sunrise, you will reach the summit of the volcano. You’ll have about one hour to enjoy the breathtaking views and take photos. Afterward, you’ll begin your descent back to the base of the volcano, which will also take about 6.5 to 7.5 hours. The driver will be waiting for you at the parking area.

Было очень сложно карабкаться на вверх, но еще сложнее спускаться, потому что нагрузка на колени колоссальная, но оно того стоило!))
