Padang Padang Beach, also known as Pantai Labuan Sait, is located on the southwest of the Bukit Peninsula, in the Pecatu area, near the village of Ungasan, about 28 kilometers from Denpasar. The beach is hidden among limestone cliffs, accessible through a cave or via a narrow staircase with 50 steps.
• Size and appearance: A small beach about 100 meters long, resembling a cozy cove surrounded by white cliffs. The white sand has a coarse texture, turquoise water shimmers, and black boulders with green moss create an incredibly picturesque landscape.
• Seabed and waves: The rocky seabed and gentle entry into the water make it safe for swimming. Surfers ride the waves farther from the shore, where they reach the ideal height.
• Best time to visit: Sunrises and sunsets are especially beautiful here, when the cliffs and water glow with golden and red hues.
History and popularity
The beach was almost unknown until the 1990s, when it was discovered by photographers and filmmakers. Highlights include:
- Music video filming by Michael Learns To Rock in 1996.
- Scenes from the movie In God’s Hands (1998).
- Worldwide fame after the release of Eat Pray Love starring Julia Roberts in 2010.
Since then, Padang Padang has become a pilgrimage site not only for movie fans but also for professional surfers.
Surfing at the beach

• Waves: Local waves, known as the “Bali Pipeline,” create a cylindrical effect perfect for surfing. This challenging element is suitable only for professionals.
• Competitions: Since 2004, the prestigious Rip Curl Padang Padang Championship has been held annually in July–August.
Infrastructure and amenities
- On the cliff top, there are parking areas, souvenir shops, and small grocery stores.
- The beach has showers and toilets, with umbrellas and surfboard rentals available.
- Local cafes offer snacks and cocktails, though options are limited, and many tourists prefer to bring their own food.
- Fresh coconuts, smoked fish, and local delicacies are sold directly on the beach.
