Nungnung Waterfall (Air Terjun Nungnung) rightfully ranks among the most beautiful places in Bali. Its main feature is the incredible power and abundance of water, cascading down with a roar from a height of 50 meters. This makes it one of the most impressive waterfalls on the island. In terms of height, it is second only to the famous Sekumpul Waterfall in northern Bali.
The entrance to Nungnung waterfall begins with traditional Balinese split gates, behind which lies a long walking path of 485 steps. The stairs vary in size: at first, the way is gentle with wide and low steps, but closer to the waterfall, the staircase becomes steeper and the steps higher. This journey can be challenging for those without good physical fitness, so be sure to consider your strength before visiting.
The path to the waterfall
The descent takes about 15 minutes. The trail winds through dense jungle, where the distant sound of rushing water can already be heard from the first steps. The landscapes along the way impress with their lush tropical greenery. The road leads into a gorge, where streams trickle down the walls and a smaller waterfall, known as “Little Nungnung,” flows into the river. This natural setting creates an atmosphere of anticipation for something truly grand.
When you reach the end of the path, an awe-inspiring sight opens before you: a powerful stream of water plunges from a height of around 50 meters, creating a cloud of mist. The air is saturated with moisture, and the silver streams of water against the rich greenery look mesmerizing. The waterfall is especially beautiful at midday, when sunlight dances on the droplets, forming a rainbow.
Swimming and safety
At the base of the waterfall, a small pool is formed where visitors can swim. However, standing directly under the stream is strongly discouraged: the flow is too powerful, and rocks may occasionally fall from above. It is safer to swim at a distance. Note that the water in the pool is murky due to its silty bottom, so locals often prefer to swim in the nearby river instead.
