Dreamland Beach, located on the western coast of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, is one of the island’s most famous beaches. Its popularity comes from the unique combination of picturesque landscapes, high waves perfect for surfing, and a rich history.

General information

  • Location: Bukit Peninsula, southern Bali.
  • Beach length: About 500 meters.
  • Surface: Golden sand with black patches near the cliffs.
  • Best time to visit: Dry season (April–October).

History and name

The name “Dreamland Beach” appeared in the 20th century. There are two versions of its origin:

  1. A fairy-tale place:In the 1970s, Australian surfers began visiting this secluded beach, calling it “Dreamland” for its beauty and good waves. Legend has it that an Italian traveler was the first to name it, captivated by its magnificence.
  2. The broken dream:In the 1980s, the beach became part of an ambitious tourism development project on the Bukit Peninsula. However, the 1998 financial crisis and the arrest of the project organizer, Tommy Suharto, halted the plans. The name “Dreamland” remained as a symbol of the locals’ unfulfilled hopes for prosperity.

Beach features

  • Waves and surfing:High waves, exceeding one meter, make the beach popular with professional surfers. For beginners, conditions are too difficult, so other locations are recommended for learning.
  • Swimming:Swimming is not recommended due to strong currents, high waves, and a rocky bottom. However, during low tide, the water is calmer, allowing for walks along the shoreline.
  • Sunsets:The beach is especially beautiful in the evening when the sunlight reflects off the cliffs, creating an atmosphere of seclusion and romance.

Infrastructure

  • Restaurants and cafés:Local cuisine is available, but prices are above average, especially near the beach access points.
  • Umbrella and sunbed rentals:Beach equipment and surfboards are available for rent.
  • Golf course:On top of the cliff, there is one of the island’s best 85-hectare golf courses, famous for its stunning ocean views.

Activities

  1. Surfing and bodysurfing: The main activity on the beach.
  2. Photoshoots: Dreamland is frequently used for music videos and wedding photography.
  3. Beach walks: Secluded corners and cliffs are ideal for peaceful strolls.

Tips for tourists

  • Bring water shoes: The bottom is scattered with sharp rocks that can cause injuries.
  • Be cautious in the water: Strong waves can knock down even experienced swimmers.
  • Visit on weekdays: The beach gets crowded on weekends with tourists and locals.
  • Bring water and snacks: Prices in beach cafés are inflated.

Dreamland is a place where picturesque nature meets the spirit of adventure. Despite the developing infrastructure and increasing number of tourists, the beach retains its unique atmosphere. It is an ideal spot for surfing, enjoying the ocean, and exploring Bali’s history.
