The Campuhan Ridge Walk, also known as the Artist’s Trail, is one of the most popular walking routes in Ubud. This scenic path runs along the ridge of Campuhan Hill, nestled between the Campuhan and Wos rivers. Locals call it Bukit Gunung Lebah (“Hill of the Mountain Bee”), while English-speaking visitors sometimes refer to it as the Tjampuhan Sacred Hills.

Route description

The trail stretches for about 2 kilometers and is divided into three parts:

  1. TrailheadThe walk begins near the temple Pura Gunung Lebah, close to Jl. Raya Ubud. To find the entrance, head towards Villa Ibah, where a sign marked “Going to the hill” points the way. After passing a small fork, walk around the temple and follow the steps upward.

2. Main section

The central part of the trail runs along the ridge, offering sweeping views of tropical greenery, meadows, and the surrounding landscape. To the left, you can see the Wos River and houses along Jl. Raya Sanggingan, while on the right flows the Campuhan River. This area is often chosen for yoga practice, picnics, or simply relaxing away from the bustle of town.

3. End of the route

The path concludes in the village of Sidem, where visitors will find souvenir shops, small cafés, and spa salons. Beyond lies the quieter and more secluded village of Sebali. The return journey takes less time thanks to a gentle downhill walk.

A round trip along the Campuhan Ridge Walk takes about two hours. It is an ideal spot for morning jogs, leisurely walks in fresh air, and memorable photo sessions.

History of the trail

The name “Artist’s Trail” appeared thanks to Russian-speaking tourists. Officially, the place is called the Campuhan Ridge. The rivers surrounding the path have been considered sacred since ancient times, as Balinese people believed they carried divine energy.

At the starting point of the trail stands Pura Gunung Lebah, a temple that has long been a pilgrimage site. Beginning in the 1930s, European artists such as Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet came to Ubud, inspired by the natural beauty of these surroundings. It is believed that many of their first works were created here.

Tips for visitors
