Banyumala Waterfall, also known as Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, is a quiet natural corner in the heart of northern Bali. It is located in the village of Wanagiri, Buleleng regency, far from the busy resorts of the southern and northern coasts.
The name of Banyumala Waterfall comes from the words “banyu” meaning “water” and “mala” meaning “sins.” In translation from Indonesian, it signifies that bathing in its waters can cleanse the soul from sins and negative influences.
Appearance
Banyumala is a cascading waterfall about 40 meters high. Its uniqueness lies in two main permanent streams, which is why it is often called the “twin waterfall.” During the rainy season, additional streams appear, enhancing its beauty. The site resembles a closed bowl: it is surrounded on all sides by sheer cliffs covered in lush tropical vegetation.
At the foot of the waterfall lies a natural pool of nearly perfect round shape, about 20 meters in diameter. Its crystal-clear water, transparent down to the bottom, creates a calm and serene atmosphere. This place is ideal for meditation, yoga, or simply a relaxing rest.
Road to the waterfall
The path to Banyumala begins at the sign “Banyumala Twin Waterfalls,” which leads from a paved road to a narrow dirt track about 3–4 kilometers long. The road consists of two strips of tiles laid directly into the ground, allowing minimal passability. However, because of its narrowness, cars can hardly pass each other; walking or riding a scooter is much easier.
At the entrance to the complex, there is a ticket counter where a small entrance fee is collected. Nearby are small shops where you can buy water or snacks. From there, you will need to descend along a steep path for about 15 minutes, with bamboo railings and earthen steps. During the rainy season, this section becomes slippery, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
Facilities and surroundings
On the banks of the waterfall, there are gazebos, benches, and viewing platforms offering panoramic views of the streams. At the pool at the base, you can swim or simply enjoy the coolness. The water may feel chilly in the morning but becomes more comfortable later in the day. A small stream flows out of the pool, along which you can take a pleasant walk. Bamboo bridges and makeshift wooden crossings span the stream.
On the banks you will also find:
• stone pyramids created by visitors;
• a Hindu idol reminding of the sacred nature of this place;
• cliffs covered with thick greenery, creating the effect of a “green roof.”

On the way to the waterfall, you may encounter playful monkeys that gladly accept treats of fruit or sweets. These little creatures add a lively sense of connection with nature, although at times their behavior can be quite persistent.
Conclusion
Banyumala Waterfall is a place that impresses not only with its natural beauty but also with an atmosphere of seclusion and harmony. Even the challenging path to it becomes part of the adventure, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the unique nature of Bali.
