Overview

If you think you’ve already seen the unusual side of Indonesia, you simply haven’t been to Papua. This is one of the country’s most remote and distinctive regions — where the familiar tourist world ends and an entirely different reality begins: high mountain valleys, tribes that have preserved their ancient way of life, and nature that has barely changed in centuries.

The highland part of Papua remained almost unknown to the outside world for a long time. It wasn’t until 1938 that explorers first discovered that tens of thousands of people lived among these mountains — communities that had developed their own culture over centuries in complete isolation. That’s why travelling here feels entirely different from any other route across Indonesia.

The heart of this tour is the chance to see the life of the Dani people not as a tourist show, but as the true everyday reality of the region. You’ll trek through the Baliem Valley, past villages, suspension bridges and traditional farmland, meet local communities, and attend a traditional pig festival still held according to the ancient customs of the Papuan highlands.

There are no familiar resorts, beach clubs or tourist infrastructure here. People come for a different kind of experience — to witness a place that, even today, remains one of the least explored and most extraordinary regions in all of Indonesia. Sometimes it’s precisely these journeys that change your perception of a country the most.

The Baliem Valley Resort 3* (Google Maps)

Baliem Valley Resort is an eco-lodge located in the heart of Papua’s highland Baliem Valley — one of Indonesia’s most remote and culturally rich regions. The resort features 15 spacious Honai bungalows (“honai” means “house” in the local language), each offering garden or valley views and furnished with either a double bed or twin beds. The lobby and restaurant open onto sweeping panoramic views of the Baliem Valley and host one of the largest private collections of Papuan art in Indonesia. The restaurant serves freshly prepared Indonesian dishes made with ingredients sourced from surrounding local farmers, alongside an American-style breakfast. Free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby, and the 4G mobile network reaches the resort. Set within over 1,000 hectares of protected private land surrounded by traditional Dani villages, the resort blends comfort with a deep connection to nature and the local highland culture.

  • 3 nights in a Honai bungalow
  • Full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
  • Local guide and private excursions
  • Free Wi-Fi in the lobby area

Day 1 Arrival in Wamena & check-in at Baliem Valley Resort

On arrival at Wamena airport, your local guide and driver will meet you, marking the start of your journey into the Papuan highlands.

En route to the hotel, you'll stop at the Wamena market — the largest in the region, where members of local tribes sell vegetables, fruit, sweet potatoes, and other staples that form the foundation of everyday life in the Baliem Valley.

From there, you'll transfer to Baliem Valley Resort for check-in. The rest of the day is yours to unwind and take in your first impressions of Papua's remarkable mountain landscapes.

  • Transfer: approximately 45 minutes
  • Accommodation: Baliem Valley Resort
  • Meals: full board
Day 2 Trekking through the southern Baliem Valley

After breakfast, you'll set out to explore the southern part of the Baliem Valley — one of the most authentic regions of Papua, where the traditional way of life is still preserved.

The route passes through Dani villages, farmland, suspension bridges, terraced fields, and wild sugarcane groves. Along the way, you'll get a real sense of how local people live far from major cities and modern infrastructure.

A picnic with views over the valley is planned during the walk, followed by a return to the lodge in the afternoon.

  • Walking time: approximately 4 hours
  • Total transfer time: approximately 2 hours
  • Accommodation: Baliem Valley Resort
  • Meals: full board
Day 3 Traditional Dani pig festival

Today brings one of the region's most compelling cultural experiences — a visit to a traditional Dani village and participation in a local pig festival.

This is an ancient ceremony in which residents of several villages gather to socialise, cook together, and perform traditional rituals. The heart of the festival is cooking food in an earth oven using heated stones — a method passed down through generations of the Papuan highlands.

During the visit, you'll have the chance to witness the ceremony from within, get to know local traditions, and taste traditionally prepared pork and sweet potatoes.

You'll return to the lodge by evening.

  • The festival takes place in different villages — transfer times depend on the location
  • Light walking involved
  • Accommodation: Baliem Valley Resort
  • Meals: full board
