Overview

Two days away from the beaches and traffic — a different side of Bali.

The climb up Mount Batur begins at night. By sunrise, you’re at the summit of an active volcano, 1,717 metres above sea level. Hardened lava underfoot, the sun rising over the lake and clouds in front of you.

A hotel close to the trail spares you the night transfer across the island. You can sleep properly, walk to the starting point, and return — without hours on the road in the dark.

The second morning unfolds on the water. A traditional boat with a local oarsman crosses Lake Batur to the village of Trunyan, where the Bali Aga people preserve a way of life that predates the island’s Hindu era. Their burial tradition exists nowhere else on Bali: the deceased are neither cremated nor buried, but laid beneath the sacred Taru Menyan tree.

From there, Alas Harum: swings over the edge of the cliff, rice terraces below. One of the most recognisable images of Bali — if that’s what you’re looking for.

The day ends in hot springs, heated by the same volcano you climbed at dawn. Warm water after a night ascent does more than any spa.

Because of this, the area attracts a large number of flies. You may encounter them everywhere; unfortunately, there is no way to avoid them. Please be understanding and simply ignore them, as the locals do.
• If private transfers are required from three or more different areas, please check with the manager for possible additional car fees.
