Aling-Aling Waterfall

The name “Aling-Aling” translates from Indonesian as “flying water,” which perfectly reflects the waterfall’s dynamic nature. Its swiftly tumbling streams evoke a sense of vibrant and unfettered energy.

Waterfall Features

Aling-Aling stands approximately 30 meters high. It is distinguished by two parallel flows that crash against the rocks, creating a turquoise pool at the base. On sunny days, the water in this basin appears especially bright and crystal clear. Officially, swimming here is not allowed due to the pool’s depth and the waterfall’s sacred status; however, some visitors, disregarding the ban, still venture into the water.

Getting There

The approach begins at the parking area, from which it’s about a 15-minute walk to the waterfall. The trail passes through cocoa, coffee, and rice plantations before descending into a gorge. Along the way, you’ll see lush jungle views, sheer cliffs, and tropical vegetation.

Two parking lots are available near the waterfall. One is situated about 300 meters from the entrance, while the other is closer, saving energy for the main hike.

Surroundings and Activities

Several additional waterfalls lie close to Aling-Aling, including Kroya, Pucuk, Kembar, Cemara, Canging, and Dedari. For visitors’ convenience, there are trekking routes of various lengths:

1. Short Route (2 hours): Aling-Aling, Kroya, Pucuk, and Kembar

2. Medium Route (3–4 hours): The more distant Cemara, Canging, and Dedari waterfalls

3. Long Route (5–6 hours): A hike covering all seven waterfalls, including the hidden Sambangan Gardens

4. Full-Day Trek: Also includes the sacred Tirta Kuning spring located inside a cave

Each trek promises views of tropical forest, mossy rocks, and diverse wildlife, including rare birds, green snakes, and wild bees.

Activities

Cliff Jumping

Thrill-seekers can leap into the pool from ledges of 5, 10, or even 15 meters. It takes some courage, but the adrenaline rush is well worth the effort.

Natural Water Slides

For those who prefer a less extreme adventure, there are natural water slides. Visitors put on life jackets and happily slide down the flowing streams.

Sacred Significance

For the local community, the waterfall holds spiritual importance. In the village of Sambangan, dedicated efforts are made to protect the natural environment, and tourists are asked to respect local traditions, keep the area clean, and follow the rules.
